Recycling of Post-Use Bioprocessing Plastic Containers—Mechanical Recycling Technical Feasibility

Most of the plastic-based solutions used in bio-manufacturing are today incinerated after use, even not “bio-contaminated”. Bioprocessing bags for media and buffer preparation storage represent largest amount today. The aim this work was to technically assess feasibility mechanical recycling bioprocessing bags. Materials from different sorting strategies have been characterized, their suitability further use. Quantitative physical tests analysis (FTIR, DSC, TGA, density, MFI, color, tensile, flexural, Charpy choc) were performed. data show that these recycled plastics could be oriented towards second use requiring properties similar equivalent virgin materials. A comparative life cycle assessment, based on a theoretical framework, shows end presents advantage keeping material loop, without showing significant statistical difference compared incineration with regards climate change indicator.
